Past President's Initiative

What is the Past President's Initiative?

While serving as President of the Chapter during the 2008-2009 year, Nathaniel (Nate) Carty challenged himself and all future Chapter Presidents to undertake a fundraising campaign in the year following their Presidency to fund the Chapter's Scholarship Endowment. The Chapter currently awards several scholarships of up to $2000 a piece to deserving students from the Northeast set to attend the University who show not only academic excellence, but also leadership skills and a strong desire to help their community. These scholarships are paid for with proceeds generated from chapter events throughout the year. Additionally, the Chapter sends additional proceeds to fund its endowment in Austin.

The long range goal of the Past President's Initiative is to fund the endowment to a point where the Chapter can award an annual full undergraduate scholarship to a student from the Northeast.

Why is the Initiative important?

The University is making a major push to gain exposure in the Northeast, particularly in New York City. In 2008, UT President Bill Powers held a reception at the Yale Club in New York City to discuss the state of the University. He emphasized that the Northeast region is vital to generate awareness of the University on a national level as well as to increase enrollment of key leaders who will help make UT the leading public university in the world. This year, the University is planning a local New York City reception to kick off their new capital campaign.

Further, a Regional Northeast Development and Admissions Counselor has been hired to work full time in New York City to recruit students from this area to the University. To further support this campaign, our chapter, The New York Texas Exes, seeks to raise additional funds for full undergraduate scholarships in order to assist the University in attracting the best students from our area.

The Current Campaign

For his personal fundraising activity, Nate launched a fundraising campaign that will last through the end of 2009. Nate will personally make a matching contribution to the first $1,000 donated, which will also be matched contribution by Nate's company, Royal Bank of Canada, meaning that for each dollar of the first $1,000 donated, $3 will be deposited into the endowment. All gifts are fully tax deductible and any gifts over $50 will receive a tax deduction form from New York Texas Exes by mail. We are pleased to announce that the initial goal has been met in under 2 months! While the match has been exhuasted, we hope you will continue to support this endevour with your generous donations.

We hope that you will support the Chapter in this ambitious endeavor. The leaders of the New York Texas Exes Chapter thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
