Resources
Below you will find various resources that can help you to find an apartment, roommate, or just information about the different parts of the city. Please note that New York Texas Exes cannot guarantee the accuracy of any information received from these links.
Resources for long term housing
NY Bits: NY Bits is a website that list information about rental buildings throughout the city. Most listings are in Manhattan, but there are some in the other boroughs. Information about each building varies, but generally there is contact information for the buildings management or rental office. Many buildings offer no-fee apartments, but the prices may be hirer than you might find with a broker.
Craigslist NYC: It goes without saying that craigslist is a great resource for finding just about anything, but we felt it was worth mentioning anyway. Listings generally move very quickly though, and various sublets, apartments or roommates are constantly being listed.
NYC Housing Development Corp: The NYC Housing Development Corporation handles the city's rent controlled and rent subsidized programs. Information about new projects, as well as how to apply for low or medium income rental units can be found here. Remember though that demand far exceeds supply for these units, so while it is worth checking out, and, if you qualify, getting on some waiting lists, this should not be considered a primary source for your first apartment in New York!
Resources for temporary housing:
Women's Only Residences
The Brandon: A Women's residence in Upper West Side, guests may stay for as few as three days. Monthly rates are available. NYTE does not have a specific relationship with Brandon, but it was recommended by several members that had used it for short stays during internships or when first moving into the city. There are other residences like this, but this is the only one that we have had recommended to us.
The Parkside Evangeline Residence: 18 Gramercy Park South, NYC, (212) 677-6200
The Markle Residence: 123 W. 13th Street, NYC, (212) 242-2400
The Webster: 419 W. 34th Street, NYC, (212) 967-9000
St. Mary's Residence: 225 E. 72nd Street, NYC, (212) 249-6850
Other Temporary Housing
YMCA: While most have heard of the YMCA, many do not know that the YMCA offers Guest Rooms for short term stays. Like the women's residence listed above, we do not have a direct relationship with the YMCA, but have had several favorable reports from members that have stayed there when first moving to the city.
Sublet.com: Subletting means renting an apartment from another renter, rather than directly from the landlord. Sublet.com lists sublets ranging from as short as a week to a year or more. It is a great resource for finding temporary living arrangements when you first move to the city.
